Warrenton, Wright City girls wrestlers gear up for districts

Posted

This weekend at Mexico High School in mid-Missouri, the Warren County contingent of girls' high school wrestlers will take their best shot at making the upcoming MSHSAA state tournament.

Wright City senior Sadie Sehnert, who has wrestled very well this season at 145 pounds with a 28-3 record according to trackwrestling.com, said her goals for the next few weeks are simple.

She’d like a return trip to Mizzou Arena the last week of February to, hopefully, improve upon her fifth-place finish in state at 130 pounds, after taking second in her district tournament a year ago.

Sehnert was one of four Wildcat wrestlers to qualify for state in 2025, as Wright City placed third as a team at the district tournament.

“I hope to make state,” said Sehnert earlier this season about how she would like to see the wrestling season end. “Hopefully I can place.”

Wright City Coach Fred Ross said that, even though the stage is a bit bigger and the lights shine a little brighter at the district tournament, the team’s goals remain unchanged from any other event.

“We look forward to competing in one of the best girls districts top to bottom in the state,” Ross said. “As in all tournaments, we want to finish with more wins than losses.   We will have a couple of girls back from injury and ready to go for districts. We will try to limit mistakes and be mentally and physically prepared.  Hopefully, we can wrestle well and have the girls qualify for the state tournament.”

Last year, Warrenton’s Alison Vacek and Alexis Ruff advanced through the same district to make it to the state tournament.

Both teams will compete in the Class 1 District 2 tournament in Mexico.

The competition takes place on Friday, with matches beginning at 5 p.m., and resuming on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Friday’s matches will consist of first-round and second-round matches, quarterfinals, and first and second-round wrestlebacks.

On Saturday, the third through fifth rounds of wrestlebacks, the semifinals and consolation semifinals, as well as the first- and third-place matches, will take place.

Teams competing in the district include: Blair Oaks, Boonville, Brookfield, California, Carrollton, Centralia, Chillicothe, Fatima, Fort Zumwalt East, Fort Zumwalt South, Fulton, Hallsville, Hannibal, Highland, Holt, Kirksville, Lutheran St. Charles, Macon, Marceline, Marshall, McCluer North, Mexico, Moberly, North Callaway, Orchard Farm, Owensville, Palmyra, Parkway North, South Callaway, Southern Boone, St. Charles, St. Charles West, STEAM Academy, Tipton, Trenton, Warrenton, Winfield and Wright City.

Tickets are $6 per day and must be purchased online at https://events.hometownticketing.com/boxoffice/mshsaa/L2VtYmVkL2V2ZW50LzQxODE%3D

The top four wrestlers in each weight class will advance to the state meet, which will take place on February 25-26 at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.
