Warrenton, Wright City coaches earn first career victories

Tuesday brought early-season milestones for Warren County teams.

A pair of coaches earned their first victories as Warrenton soccer and volleyball each emerged victorious.

Warrenton boys soccer 2, St. Charles West 1 – New Warriors Head Coach Jake Brown and his team opened the season at home with a 2-1 win over visiting St. Charles West.

“It was a great win,” Brown said. “We’d hoped to capitalize on more chances, but we had a ton of chances to score and just couldn’t finish, which has been a focus in practice. We will get there. When things weren’t going our way, we got gritty, which is something I love about this team.”

As it was, Gavin Thompson and Tyler Scruggs scored for Warrenton while Scruggs and Caden Baum provided the assists.

Warrenton will next play on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. against Holt (1-1).

Wright City girls volleyball 3, Chamois 0 –Wright City Coach Gabby Vogt, guiding the team for just the second time, earned her first win as the Wildcats rolled to the 25-2, 25-3, 25-13 win at Chamois.

“The first win felt great,” Vogt said. “It was truly a team win, as every player was able to contribute. It was exciting to see all of the hard work the girls put in throughout the summer and preseason come together and pay off tonight.”

Leading the way for the Wildcats was Brooke Henson with six aces and Jo Grueneberg, who led the team with 10 assists. Several players shared the lead in kills during the match.

Vogt said that the team’s season-opening loss at Winfield the day before served as a catalyst in the team’s focused play on Tuesday.

“The girls were highly motivated following our loss to Winfield the night before,” Vogt said. “They were ready to get back on the court and compete. Brooke Henson stepped up in the first set and had a point run to 25 points. The second set was very similar. Our serving was a major factor in the win, along with our ability to minimize mental errors and stay focused throughout the match.”

Wright City (1-1) will return to the court at 6 p.m. on Thursday to open the home portion of its schedule against Bowling Green (0-3).

Warrenton softball 5. St. Charles West 4 (eight innings) – It was senior Audrey Skillman who put the Warriors (2-3) in a spot the team hadn’t seen since the 2024 season.

After having one win all of last year, Warrenton earned its second after defeating Jefferson City to open the season, when Skillman provided a walk-off win in the eighth.

Hannah Gibson earned the win for Warrenton.

The Warriors will return to the diamond for the team’s next scheduled contest when the team plays at Borgia at 4:15 p.m. today.

Wright City softball 19, St. Clair 0 (Three innings) – The Wildcats rebounded sharply after falling in the championship game of the Boonville Tournament by trouncing the host Bulldogs on Tuesday.

Lorelai Kellner racked up four hits in the three innings of play to help pace Wright City (3-1).

The Wildcats will next host Elsberry (4-1) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

Washington volleyball 3, Warrenton 0 – A close first set didn’t go the Warriors’ way, and neither did the match.

Warrenton dropped its contest on the road 26-24, 25-19, 25-14.

The Warriors (1-2-3) will next return to the court at 5 p.m. Thursday at St. Charles West.
