Warrenton Wrestling Coach Kevin Fowler believes his team has a chance to win a conference title for the first time in the program’s history.Following a 2-0 start in GAC action, the Warriors are awaiting their second conference quad and will compete in the GAC Tournament this weekend. On Monday Warrenton traveled to Liberty High School in O’Fallon where it defeated the host team 55-24 and shut out Orchard Farm 84-0. The Warriors also topped O’Fallon Christian 63-16.“These are some new programs still getting established, so the competition isn’t the best,” said Fowler. “It’s not a bad meet to come back to off of break.”The actual matches were fairly limited, with the opposing teams having a wealth of open weights.Seth Brierly was the only Warrenton grappler to have an opponent against each school, going 3-0 at 126 pounds with three pins.“He had a solid night, but many of our guys didn’t get much action on the mats,” said Fowler.Dominic Kennedy went 2-0 in his pair of 113-pound matches, while Christian Yates won both of his 120-pound bouts.Mason Timmerberg returned to the lineup after missing the first semester. He moved to 2-0 with a win at both 182 pounds and 195 pounds.Fowler says the more challenging conference meet will be against St. Charles and St. Charles West later in the season. The Warriors are preparing for the GAC Tournament this weekend, but the event actually has no bearing on the conference standings.“This is a tournament that went away for a while, but the coaches decided to bring it back because the competition is so good that it mirrors the state tournament,” said Fowler. He expects defending state runner-up Dan Filipek, who remains unbeaten, to compete for a tournament title at 152 pounds.Additionally, James Biship at 138 pounds, Yates and Brierly should find their way into the trophy rounds.“Any of our guys that made the state tournament last year we would expect to compete for a title in this tournament,” said Fowler. The GAC Tournament will be held at St. Charles West High School, beginning at 5 p.m. on Friday and 9:30 a.m. on Saturday.KENNEDY SWEEPS FIELDDerrick Forsythe photo.
