Warrenton wrestling concludes GAC season, preps for district tournament

With the district meet just over a week away, Coach Kevin Fowler is making the final assessments on how many of his grapplers will push through to state. The Warrenton wrestling team closed its GAC schedule last Wednesday with a second-place finish and traveled to its final tournament at Blue Springs South over the weekend. The Warriors returned home with five medalists, with a handful of competitors reaching their peak at the right time while others are struggling recently.Senior Dan Filipek continued his tear through the 152-pound field, going 6-0 to close with a 5-3 decision over state medalist Caleb Crabtree from Platte County.“Dan had another solid weekend, and took his finals opponent down twice,” said Fowler. “He’s right on track to reach his goals.”Filipek improved to 43-0. A perfect playout of the remainder of the season would find him at 53-0, meaning he would break his brother J.J.’s school wins record.“He’s focused on getting these 10 more wins,” said Fowler.Filipek was the Warriors’ only champion, with seniors Christian Yates and James Biship taking third place.Yates finished 5-0 on the first day and completed the tournament 8-1 after facing a full field at 120 pounds. He closed with an 8-2 decision over Blayce Tipton of Blue Springs South.Biship lost in the semifinals of the 138-pound bracket but battled back to win his final four matches and pin his third-place opponent.“He’s probably looked the best he has all year,” said Fowler. “He got back on track and wrestled a lot better than he has been.”Senior Dominic Kennedy also dropped his semifinal match, before winning four straight at 106 pounds to advance to the third-place bout, where he lost by fall.Rounding out the medals for Warrenton was senior Seth Brierly, who took fifth at 126 pounds. The majority of the Warriors’ success came at the lower weights, as the five heavier weights all came up empty-handed in terms of hardware.“This is one of the toughest tournaments outside of the GAC Tournament,” said Fowler. “It was good for us in preparing for districts.”Warrenton will compete in the Class 3 District 2 Tournament at Westminster High School on Friday, Feb. 13 and Saturday, Feb. 14.WARRIORS PREP FOR DISTRICT TOURNAMENTDerrick Forsythe photo.
