After a rough couple of games in which the Warrenton boys' basketball team suffered back-to-back defeats to Holt and Orchard Farm, the team was left searching for a spark.
Wednesday night to open the 47th annual Hermann Invitational Tournament, the Warriors found that spark – from its bench.
In the team’s 52-34 win over Montgomery County Warrenton (7-10), the team got a jolt from the team’s bench, along with plenty of intangible efforts that helped propel the team to victory, Coach Mark Thomas said.
“Our subs really stepped up tonight,” Thomas said. “They played some big minutes.”
Included in those efforts was a big 3-pointer from senior post Billy Speiser as the Warriors moved out to the 26-14 halftime lead.
Other key figures in the win included: junior guard Carter Martin’s 12 points, which came, in large part, from a trio of 3-pointers, senior forward Taylor Anderson’s 11 points, and senior guard Deadrick Forrest’s 10.
“The team played well, they shared the ball,” Thomas said. “It was a good team win.”
The win means that Warrenton earned a date with top-seeded St. James in a tournament semifinal at 8:30 tonight. The two teams met in the tournament last year, with St. James earning the 61-50 win.
ST. JAMES 68, WRIGHT CITY 23 – In another quarterfinal at Hermann, Wright City (3-13) dropped a tough decision to top-seeded St. James.
Wright City is next scheduled to play Montgomery County in a consolation semifinal tonight at 7 p.m.
The Wildcats have lost 16 straight games to the team’s Eastern Missouri foe, dating back to a victory in January of 2010.
LUTHERAN SOUTH GIRLS 72, WARRENTON 40 – In the opening game of the 12th annual Washington Tournament, the Warrenton girls fell behind 24-9 after the first quarter.
From there, top-seeded Lutheran South grew the lead.
Junior guard Sophia Benke led the Warriors (5-9) with 17 points while senior guard Savannah Miller added seven points and sophomore guard Claire Goldsmith and senior forward Zoe Duncan pitched in five apiece.
The loss put the Warriors into a consolation semifinal at 4 p.m. today against Fort Zumwalt West. Warrenton and Zumwalt West have met only twice before, splitting the games in 2004 and 2005.
