A 25-6 record and three tournament championships didn’t do much to help the Warrenton volleyball team in this year’s Class 3, District 7 tournament.
The Warriors were given the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 Winfield Monday at St. Francis Borgia in Washington.
“I think our district will be one of the toughest in the state for Class 3,” Warrenton Head Coach Randy Kindschuh said. “Heck, we have 25 wins and are seeded fourth. Where else would you find that?”
The Warriors will be looking for their first win against Winfield (12-9-1) in three tries this season.
Their Gateway Athletic Conference North rival beat them in two sets Sept. 5, and three sets Sept. 21.
“The first time we were short-handed, and the second time we lost in three,” Kindschuh said. “So it should be a competitive first-round game.”
Monday’s winner will face top-seeded and undefeated O’Fallon Christian, and Kindschuh hopes his team’s success in tournaments this season will help it next week.
“I think our success in tournaments can’t help but prepare us for the district tourney, where we will have to play consecutive games,” he said.
Kindschuh believes his team’s biggest improvements from August until now have come from serving and attacking, and the Warriors installed a faster offense that he said should make his team harder to defend.
The semifinal against Christian would be played Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The championship is scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
“We will have to play really well to win the tournament,” Kindschuh said. “Christian, Borgia and Lutheran (St. Charles) are all quality programs with good records this year. We will have to block better and not give many ‘free’ opportunities to the opponent.”
