Warrenton Visits Troy Tonight

Where: Troy High SchoolWhen: Friday, Sept. 6.Time: 7 p.m.Coaches: Warrenton — Steve McDowell. Troy — Par Pitts.Records: Warrenton — 0-1. Troy — 1-0.Last Year’s Meeting: Troy 35, Warrenton 19.Troy rushed for 296 yards during a game that was limited to the ground by torrential rain. Troy opened the game with a 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdowns. Warrenton countered on the ensuing drive, but the Trojans’ Devon Fuller unleashed four touchdowns during the second and third quarters. Warrenton quarterback T.J. Lafaver completed nine of 15 passes for 107 yards.Outlook: During a 40-26 season-opening win over Zumwalt South last week, the Trojans rushed for 390 yards, throwing the ball just three times. McDowell is expecting them to operate out of a pro-look three-receiver set. He anticipates they will use Fuller in Wildcat situations, with Warrenton needing to defend well against the option. Another name that may be called a lot is Justin Sutphin, who contributed 116 rushing yards in the opener.Defensively, the Trojans will bring a 3-4 look. Fuller also carried their tackling effort in Week One.Focal Points: The Warriors’ success was primarily limited to the defensive side of the ball against St. Dominic, but their task will be more challenging this Friday. Warrenton won’t possess the size advantage that it did during Week One and will need contributions from special teams and offense in order to be successful. The Warriors had occasional breakthroughs on offense but lacked rhythm and the ability to complete any downfield passes. With injuries hindering one starting receiver, Luke Darity, and sidelining another, Alec Tonioli, for the season, younger skills will have to rise up by necessity. McDowell witnessed that and is counting on more from sophomores Hunter Russell and Justin McBroom.
