Where: Hannibal High School. When: Thursday, Oct. 31.Time: 7 p.m.Coaches: Warrenton — Steve McDowell. Hannibal — Mark St. Clair.Records: Warrenton — 2-8. Hannibal — 6-3.Last Year’s Meeting: DNP.Outlook: The Warriors are coming off two painful defeats of varying degrees. Warrenton faced its most lopsided setback in a shutout against Zumwalt East last week. The previous Friday the Warriors gave up a meeting with Orchard Farm on a last-minute touchdown. A win in either one of those games could have awarded Warrenton the privilege of hosting a district game.McDowell says it’s time to put those disappointments in the rearview mirror and focus on the Pirates. Hannibal has a strong tradition on the gridiron and actually has an interesting history with Warrenton. The Warriors beat Hannibal in overtime when they successfully converted a two-point conversion during a previous meeting seven years ago. This season Hannibal is back to old business — running the ball. McDowell says they will operate out of a double tight pro look with split backs or an I-formation. The Pirates will work on getting to the edges with a physical attack.Defensively, Hannibal has a size advantage up front in their 4-4 look. McDowell says the linebackers lack size but make up for it with impressive speed.Focal Points: Taking a beating from undefeated Zumwalt East wasn’t the most ideal way to gain confidence heading into districts, but Thursday’s game needs to be more about salvaging pride from a season filled with skill player injuries. The Warriors will need to match Hannibal’s physicality if they want an effective Power-I formation to continue yielding success. Being aggressive at the point of attack will be necessary if Warrenton wishes to stifle the Pirates’ gritty running game.ECKENFELS RUNSDerrick Forsythe Photo.
