Warrenton track ready for medal meet

The pieces are already starting to fall into place for a restructuring Warrenton boys track team. The Warriors fine-tuned for a final time on Tuesday, competing in the Washington warmup meet, in anticipation of Friday’s first official medal meet at St. Dominic.“We did fairly well,” said Coach Steve McDowell. “As long as we stay healthy and keep ourselves focused each meet, we should be in good shape.”The sprint relay teams which have been a source of success in recent seasons look to continue meeting that precedence. They have finished among the Top 2 in each of the warmup meets, with newcomers filling in nicely. The 400-meter relay team was comprised of juniors Braydan Chmiel and Paul Lanigan, along with seniors Dane Huck and Jordon Washington. The same crew competes in the 800-meter relay, with junior Jacob Crump taking Huck’s place.“They’ve been performing real well,” said McDowell.Washington has also been a top finisher in his open 100 and 200 events. The  1,600-meter relay team is also progressing, with a pair of freshmen making an immediate impact.Randy McRoberts and Dylan Chandler have joined Crump and senior Brian Sanders for early success in the distance relays.McRoberts continues to cut time off his mile race, eclipsing the 5:00 mark on Tuesday. Junior James Goetz was also successful in reaching a new personal best in the two-mile run.Crump has also been excelling in the 300-meter hurdles, recording a new personal best. And he was not the only one to achieve that feat.Junior Justin McBroom reached a new personal mark in the long jump, while Huck reached new heights in the high jump.“The guys are coming along nicely heading into the St. Dominic meet,” said McDowell. “That’s really going to show us where we’re at against some quality competition.”The Warrenton girls team has experienced similar success early on as well, leaving its coach optimistic.“We’ve had some good results, especially with distance runners,” said Coach Mike Spoede. “Their times are coming down, and this is where you start getting the fine-tuning done.”The distance relays this year will consist of senior Madeline Sutherland, junior Mary Broker and sophomores Darya Wilke and Andrea Poole.“We’re still running the same unit,” said Spoede. “We’ve moved them around the first few meets. They’ve been consistently getting better.”Lalita Andrews has also shown her threat as a competitor in both the track and field events. She has been a top sprinter, while also setting a new personal best in the high jump.Spoede has witnessed early success from freshman Kayla Nelson as a thrower, as well as from his jumpers.“We should be able to pick up some points before we ever step foot onto the track,” said Spoede. “We’ve looked steady across the board in our field events.”He feels balance will be one of the Warriors’ strengths this season.WARRIORS HEAD TO ST.
