Warrenton Track Opens Season
Posted
By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
Conditions weren’t necessarily favorable, but it didn’t stop the Warrenton track team from putting on a solid performance during their Warrior Warm-Up event to begin the season.Rain poured on much of the meet, but lightning held off, allowing all but the final 4x400 race to be completed.Coach Steve McDowell was pleased with the effort he saw by his Warrenton boys team.“Overall I was very pleased with the effort of the kids in all stages,” said McDowell. While much was already expected of the sprinters, they perhaps exceeded early-season expectations.Jordon Washington and Drake Wagner both won their heats in the 200-meter race, clocking a 22.8.“For the first meet of the year they did very well,” said McDowell. “I’m very proud of them being able to come in first in their heats.”Washington also recorded a personal best in the 100-meter race.He and Wagner joined Carlos Lopez and Dartrez Muex in the 400-meter relay to record a 46.1, again finishing first. The 800-meter relay was off to a strong start before a fumbled baton exchange between the third and final legs. McDowell says while the error is frustrating, it’s better to happen now than during the postseason.“I’ll take it in a warm-up meet, and it’s just something we have to work on,” said McDowell. In the hurdling events, Jacob Crump clocked a 17.2 in the 110-meter event and ran a 46.1 in the 300-meter hurdles.“Those are really good times for him being a sophomore in his first meet of the year,” said McDowell.Meanwhile, in the distance events Jacob Ruby ran a 5:19 in the mile and finished the two-mile run in 11:56.“He competed very strong in both events,” said McDowell. The 3200-meter relay team consisting of Triston Cullom, James Getts, Brian Sanders and Ruby clocked a 9:53.He was also very pleased with his throwers, who showed promise out of the gate.Austin Stroer recorded a throw of 126 feet in the discus competition and tossed the shot put 41 feet.“That was outstanding for him,” said McDowell.Dylan Pyatt tossed the shot 38 feet, while Nick Boling threw 113 feet in the discus. The jumping events saw senior Brian Lanigan land a pair of personal bests. He cleared 40 feet, 6 inches in the triple jump and 19 feet, 6 inches in the long jump.“That was awesome for him because he’s worked really hard to get good at what he’s doing right now,” said McDowell.Additionally, the pole vaulting crew showed its ability to score points this season. Caleb Hodgson and Jared Kilpack each cleared 11 feet, 6 inches.“They both did fantastic and had a great night,” said McDowell. On the girls side the Warriors didn’t have as many participants but did show well in several events.“We were competitive,” said Coach Mike Spoede. “We saw the young kids get on the track and blend in the with upperclassmen it was a good first meet.”The strengths were where Spoede expected them to be, especially in the distance events.“Madeline (Carlson) and Andrea (Poole) held their own in the distance races,” said Spoede. “I felt like it was a good meet for us across the board.”
Jordon Washington was among the Warrenton athletes who recorded personal bests during the Warm-Up meet on Tuesday.
