Warrenton Track Competes at Zumwalt North

Speed carried the Warrenton boys track team to a fourth-place finish on Friday at the Zumwalt North Invitational. The Warriors shined in the sprint events, as his become routine this season. “We competed well,” said Coach Steve McDowell. Senior Devin Ray won the 100-meter dash in 11.34 seconds, with sophomore Jordon Washington coming in second at 11.74 seconds. Ray finished second in the 200-meter race, while freshman Drake Wagner placed third. “Our sprints and sprint relays have really taken off,” said McDowell. “The majority of our points are coming from there.” Washington took the track for the first time this season last week, after sitting out to allow an injury to completely heal. McDowell says he chose to ease him back into the action and utilize him in limited events. The Warriors finished second in the 4x200 with the services of Brian Lanigan, Cloud Wharton, Ray and Washington. “Adding Jordon will shave a second or two off our times,” said McDowell. The 400-meter team was disqualified after a lane violation. “We’ve been smooth all season long,” said McDowell. “It’s just something we’ve got to overcome.” Senior Nick Wallace also had a stellar showing, medaling in both hurdling events. He won the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.4 seconds and finished fourth in the 300-meter race at 45.9 seconds. “It was nice to see Nick run well in the 110s,” said McDowell. “It wasn’t even close in the hurdles, so it was exciting seeing him back at full strength.” Senior Brett Garrison also had a standout day, throwing a season-best 110 feet, 8.5 inches to place fourth in the discus. Junior Brian Lanigan continued to improve with a third-place finish in the triple jump and fourth-place in the long jump. “Brian gave us some good points there,” said McDowell. Freshman teammate Justin McBroom took fifth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump. Logan Shay placed fourth in the shot put, while Jeff Reese took fifth. It was an uncharacteristically troublesome day for the girls team, which placed seventh out of eight schools. “It just wasn’t our meet,” lamented Coach Mike Spoede. “We didn’t match up well in certain events.” Even senior Melanie Raterman, who traditionally dominates the throwing events, wasn’t among the top finishers. She placed fourth in both the shot put and discus. “Melanie was up against some pretty tough competition,” said Spoede. “She didn’t match up too well and didn’t throw to her potential in the cold weather.” Sophomore Madeline Carlson had one of the Warriors’ strongest showings, taking second in the mile run and fourth in the two mile. “She showed well by rebounding with strong mile after not medaling in the two mile,” said Spoede. Senior Melora Broker claimed a pair of third-place finishes in the 200- and 400-meter races. Freshman Lalita Andrews brought home three medals, taking fourth in the 100-meter race individually. She was a part of the 800-meter relay team, also including Phoebe Albrecht, Hannah Romaker and Lalita Andrews, that placed fifth. In addition, Andrews placed fifth in the high jump, complementing another strong effort by junior Daphne Meine, who took third by clearing 4 feet, 8 inches. “We showed some depth in a few events,” said Spoede. “We’re still playing with the roster and moving people around.”
