The city of Warrenton has agreed to vacate portions of two small streets in a deal that will allow it to build a sidewalk from Booneslick Road south along Highway U.The agreement is between the city and Keeven Family Partnership, which owns a number of parcels of land in the corner west of Highway U and south of Booneslick Road.City officials want to connect sidewalks downtown to an existing section of sidewalk at the county communications center. To do that, the city needs an easement to build along the Keeven property.“It would give us the ability to have connecting sidewalks around that curve on Highway U, which is extremely dangerous when people are walking in the street with strollers and such,” said Warrenton Director of Operations Terri Thorn. In exchange, the Keeven family asked the city to vacate sections of Pinckney Road and Celia Lane, which form a triangle with Highway U. The roads break up property that the developers would like to have as one large plot. They therefore want to remove the segments that touch Highway U, Jeff Keeven told the Warrenton Board of Aldermen.“We want to put it all together and have a larger piece where you can put a bigger building, instead of having it all chopped up,” Keeven said. “It’s for the future. There are no users at this point.”The rest of Pinckney Road and Celia Lane would be left in place to provide access for several homes there.Aldermen gave the go-ahead for staff to begin planning the project during their regular meeting May 2. Keeven Family Partnership will donate a 10-foot easement along the west side of Highway U, but a crew will have to survey the land before the agreement is finalized, Thorn said.An official ordinance vacating the sections of road and accepting the easement will be considered at a future meeting. The Warrenton Board of Aldermen meets the first and second Tuesday of each month, 7 p.m. at Warrenton City Hall. Its next meeting is May 16.Sidewalk
