Warrenton to remove Main Street trees

The city of Warrenton is preparing to remove all of the trees along Main Street.Since being planted decades ago, the trees have become too big and are a liability, said Warrenton Grounds and Maintenance Director Brad Busekrus.Busekrus pointed out the trees have been scraping against parts of buildings, especially on the south side of the street. The problem also extends below the surface, where the trees were not given enough space for their roots to grow.“They dug a 3-by-3 hole, and that’s where that tree was planted,” Busekrus said. “We have road on one side and we have sidewalks and buildings on the other. … It was kind of poor planning on the part of whoever the company was that did it.”That’s because root growth can cause damage to the surrounding sidewalk. The trees could eventually grow large enough to be a major nuisance. Bradford pears also are notoriously fragile, and the city would be liable if a falling branch damaged someone’s car.Plus, the trees leave a mess.“In the fall you get the berries, and business owners are constantly trying to get the berries off the concrete,” Busekrus said.He gave a recommendation to the city’s board of aldermen to harvest the trees and pave over their spaces. The city could replace them with flowers in planters if the board wants to keep greenery in downtown, he said.“Well, since I was the only one who voted for the trees 20-something years ago, we didn’t think a lot of these issues through,” said Ward 2 Alderman Gary Auch. “I think it’s time we harvest the trees.”With no objections from aldermen, Mayor Eric Schleuter directed Busekrus to begin removing the trees.
