Warrenton to participate in sales tax free holiday

Record Managing EditorWarrenton will continue to participate in the annual Back to School Sales Tax Free Holiday. Numerous items, such as clothes, school supplies and computers, will be exempt from state and local sales taxes Aug. 1-3.Warrenton has has participated in the annual sales tax free weekend since 2004, the same year it began in the state. Any municipality has the right to opt out of the program if it chooses. A decision has to be made by the middle of June. Aldermen, at their last meeting on Tuesday night, agreed the city needs to continue participating.“I think it’s an important tax holiday for families in getting ready for school,” Ward 1 Alderman Karen Casserly said.The items that are tax free include clothing costing less than $100, school supplies not exceeding $50 per purchases that are used in a standard classroom for educational purposes, and personal computers that don’t cost more than $3,500 and computer software up to $350.Some of the items not eligible for the sales tax exemption are watches, jewelry, CD players, sporting equipment or office equipment.In other news• An ordinance allowing a boundary adjustment for two lots located along South Highway 47 between Pitman Funeral Home and Scenic Regional Library was adopted by a 4-0 vote. The adjustment was requested since the library district is considering purchasing .75 acre to the north, a move that would increase its property to 2.5 acres. That would allow the library to expand its existing facility and be able to provide more parking.The request was recommended for approval at the planning and zoning commission meeting on May 7.• An addendum to the concession provider agreement between the city and Tournament Sports Management was passed. The change allows fees and deposits to be made every two weeks. Previously, they were set up to be paid weekly. In addition, it was also authorized that minor changes to the agreement can be made in writing and will not require board approval.• The city will spend $29,893.85 to purchase a 36-foot octagon shelter pavilion to be installed at the athletic complex. The contract was awarded to Fry and Associates of Kansas City. A second bid was received from Hutchinson Recreation, of Troy, for $37,410.• An exterior shelter with a chlorination system will be purchased for $17,500 from Brooks and Associates of Pacific. The company submitted the lowest of three bids. The budgeted amount was $23,000. Other bids were received from Huey Construction, of Fulton ($32,745) and Flynn Drilling, of Troy ($47,517).• Only one bid was received for both a walk-behind street saw and portable vacuum sampler. The street saw will cost $24,300 and will be purchased from Bobcat of St. Louis, while the bid for the vacuum sampler was awarded to USA Blue Book for $6,336.40. Both expenditures came in a combined $3,163.60 under budget.• A special event permit was awarded to the Warren County Fair Association for a demolition derby to be held Saturday, May 30, from 5-11 p.m. The planning and zoning commission had recommended approval at its May 7 meeting.• Judith Bayne was hired as a finance clerk effective May 26. She will be paid $12 an hour.• Richy Kohler was appointed as an alternate to the board of adjustment to replace Scott Schoenfeld. The recommendation, made by Mayor Eric Schleuter, was passed by a 4-0 vote.City of Warrenton
