The Warrenton softball team improved to 10-4 on the season after winning both their games on Saturday. Warrenton hosted Hannibal and Montgomery County in a round-robin format. Warrenton squeaked by Hannibal 2-1 to open the day and cruised to a 6-1 victory over Montgomery County to end their day.

“We are missing two of our starters due to contact tracing, but other girls are stepping in and filling the gaps in our lineup well,” Head Coach Chad Berry said. “Even though we are short right now, our team is turning it on and we are starting to fire on all cylinders.”

Warrenton was the home team against Hannibal, which is also a district opponent. They started the scoring off with a solo home run from senior Hailey Roberts. They tacked on another run in the fourth when junior Kathryn McChristy hit a bloop single into left, scoring sophomore Coryn Higby from first base due to great base running.

“This game was huge going into districts in a couple of weeks,” Berrey said. “This was definitely a team win with everyone doing the right thing at the right time.”

Senior Avery Tucker also added two hits of her own. On the mound, the Lady Warriors were led by their ace. McChristy went the distance, allowing only one earned run and striking out 13 batters.

“We want to be playing our best ball come district time and I think we are well on our way to doing so,” said Berry.

In their second game of the day, they faced the Lady Wildcats of Montgomery County. They scored two runs in each of the first, fifth and sixth innings to cruise to their 6-1 win.

“The bats were just alive,” said Berrey.

Offensively, the Lady Warriors were led by Roberts once again with three hits, including a triple, a RBI and one run. Senior teammate Michelle Higby collected two hits and scored a pair of runs too.

A trio of pitchers were deployed in this game as freshmen Kylie Witthaus started and collected her first varsity win after throwing three innings. She gave up an unearned run and struck out five. Junior Kaylin Haas came in for two innings, striking out six and McChristy closed the door in the last two innings, striking out five.

Warrenton’s undefeated conference record will be put to the test as they face off against three consecutive opponents from the GAC North. The Lady Warriors have not allowed a run in conference play yet.
