Moritz to Craven has already become a popular connection this season for the Warrenton soccer team. The Warriors found success from the duo again on Tuesday, as they boosted their team to a 2-1 victory at Winfield. Coach David Evans says his team was a bit out of its element, playing on a grass field for the first time this season, but responded well. “It’s always nice to see how we’re able to adapt,” said Evans. “It played into their favor a little bit with the smaller field design, but we managed.” Senior Emily Craven netted the game’s opening goal midway through the first half, after footing a cross kick from Rachel Moritz. The combination has been pivotal in helping the Warriors to a 4-2 start. “They’ve been able to make a lot of things happen for us and have been very effective,” said Evans. Tuesday’s tilt was a battle fought mostly near the middle of the field, with neither team taking a substantial amount of shots. “It was a game where both teams were limited on their offensive opportunities,” said Evans. Winfield managed to connect on one of only five looks it got at the goal, notching the game at 1-1 with 5:00 remaining in the half. “They played a 3-forward offense, which put a lot of pressure on our defense,” said Evans. His defense was up for the challenge. “It was a very physical game on both sides,” said Evans. “The girls were hard nosed and got out and worked hard.” Tawnee Hopen and Kristi Kassing led the attack“Those two did a good job of shutting it down outside,” said Evans. “They were able to force Winfield into some bad shots.” The Warriors pushed ahead 2-1 in the second half, with Craven assisting to Tyler Gregory. Kalee Kelly was strong in goal, keeping Winfield at bay. Evans says his team did what was necessary to win but could never build a comfortable lead. “We started off controlling ball really well,” said Evans. “We didn’t have nearly as many offensive shots as we had hoped though.” Still, the win was significant, helping the Warriors off to a 1-0 start in the GAC. “To come away with a conference win was a big accomplishment for us,” said Evans. “I like the new conference setup, because we’ll get the opportunity to play them again in a few weeks.” Warrenton awaits a taxing stretch of seven games in 12 days, including two challenging contests later this week. “Thursday and Friday are going to be a big test for us, because St. Charles West and St. Charles are both playing pretty strong right now,” added Evans.
