Coach David Evans was less worried about the score and more concerned with the progress when addressing his Warrenton soccer team following its 4-1 loss to Union on Monday. The Warriors had faced a superior opponent but had exhibited many positives amidst the defeat.“The team play was a lot better than what we’ve seen the last couple games,” said Evans. “Even though we didn’t win, as a group we played a lot better together. In the first couple games we had a lot of individuals out there, and tonight they seemed to mesh a lot better.”The pressure was on for senior Kalee Kelly, returning to the team for her first year as goalkeeper. She had a busy night, making 17 saves to keep the Warriors in contention.“Kalee came up big for us tonight,” said Evans. “As a defense, we really want to limit the number of shots they’re getting, but they were very strong across the board. They put a lot of aggressive balls toward the goal.”Warrenton was effective in keeping the Wildcats off the board until the 14:55 mark of the first half, when they connected a rebound off a miss.Five minutes later, Union went ahead 2-0 and secured that lead heading into halftime.“The underlying factor was at split seconds out there we were not marked up in the absolute best position,” said Evans. “They have some players that if you aren’t denying them the ball, they’re going to get shots. We were a half-step behind, and they were able to capitalize on it.”The Wildcats would add another goal at the 24:30 mark of the second half, but this time Warrenton immediately countered. The Warriors charged down the field, with Colleen Bayer scoring just two seconds later.“To come back from a 3-0 situation and be able to work the ball back up as fast as they did, I was proud of that,” said Evans, who says they want to revisit that kind of resilience. “We want to look at that play, and focus on coming out of transition like that again instead of just having a dead ball.”Union refused to back down though, controlling the possession much of the way and scoring again at the 21:00 mark.“Union is one of the better teams we’re going to play, as far as overall skill,” said Evans. “Their players are very physical and fast. They outmanned us, but I think we marked up the best we could, and to hold them to four goal is a big accomplishment.”Evans will pleased with the contribution by his reserves, as the Warriors continue to find the best combination on the field.“Another thing we saw was the girls coming off the bench filled right in great,” said Evans. “There wasn’t a gap or drop-off. They held their own. Some of the girls are still searching for their main spot. Some of them will just be utility players. They’re learning offensive and defensive concept, not just the position.”Warrenton will host Orchard Farm on Thursday.WARRENTON SOCCER FALLS TO UNIONDerrick Forsythe photo.
