Warrenton soccer relying on junior class

After a productive summer highlighted by encouraging numbers, Warrenton Soccer Coach John Schulte is ready to get the season rolling. The Warriors are coming off a 10-12 campaign during which they lost the services of their leading scorer to an knee injury.Junior Dillen Mayfield is back in commission after scoring a team-best 18 goals in limited action, but Schulte says it will take time for him to return to full condition.“We’re hoping he comes back and starts where he left off, but getting in shape is going to be a big thing for him,” said Schulte. “He was scoring like crazy before he went down last year, and I think a lot of our success is going to go through him.”Schulte says summer camps and open fields saw solid participation, showing an increased interest in the program. The youth camps offered by the team drew 70 younger players.“It was awesome having all those kids out there, with the high school kids helping out with stations,” said Schulte. One of the more dedicated offseason commitments came from senior Kyle Casserly, who will be expected to provide considerable scoring.“He’s been doing a great job for us as a wing midfielder, so he’s going to have that same role as a scoring punch,” said Schulte.Last season Casserly scored five points on two goals and an assist.“We need him to contribute and be a playmaker. I think he’s grown a lot from last year and taking that leadership role seriously.”Senior Adam Staley is also being counted on for guidance, after netting 23 points on eight goals and seven assists last season.“Adam is one of those kids who could score 25 to 30 goals easily, but getting him to take people on has been a challenge,” said Schulte. “He likes to control the ball and dish off, but he also has those opportunities where he’ll get the ball at the top of the box. He’s got a great shot with his left and right, but getting him to have the confidence to shoot is something we’re working on.“We’re going to have three or four kids who can be scoring threats,” added Schulte.Senior Alex Heitgerd finished second on the team in scoring with 25 points, connecting on nine goals and seven assists.“He’s played that forward, midfield role for us, moving all around,” said Schulte. “He’s not afraid to take people on and has a good shot.”Warrenton will have a new offensively as compared to recent seasons.“This year we’re going to try to run a whole new system,” said Schulte. “Learning that system is going to be tricky at times. Once get that system down, it should lead to us scoring a lot of goals and being really productive.”The Warriors are looking to run a 4-3-2-1 with a target player up top.“That should allow us to stop some of the transition against us,” said Schulte. The midfield could be secured by Dillon Cosgrove and Caleb Hodgson, but their services may be needed elsewhere also.Schulte says Cosgrove could also play defense.“Even though he might be playing defense, he’s going to be needed in more of a offensive role,” said Schulte.“It’s really hard to say where he can go on the field, because he can play anywhere,” said Schulte. “I can use him as a forward up top to put pressure on people.”Junior Sawyer Junker returns to the starting goalkeeper position after making 59 saves last season.“He’s been looking good over the summer,” said Schulte. “We continue to see good things out of him and hopefully he continues to grow and improve on what he’s done.”Matt Dildine and Stephen Page should also have an opportunity to contribute as goalkeepers.“They both have great things they do really well in goal, and other things they need to work on,” said Schulte. The line of defense will include sophomores Danny VanDillen and Paul Lanigan.“VanDillen has been doing a great job over the summer,” said Schulte. “As a sophomore I think he’s built a lot more confidence, and we’re looking for great things out of him this year.”Schulte liked the progression he saw from Keagan Michelson as a freshman and is counting on his defensive contributions as well. There are several younger players Schulte anticipates can make an immediate impact on varsity.Sophomores Taylor Lutz and Conor Schaumberg are vying for spots on the varsity team after promising summers.“We’ve got a huge sophomore class that is excited about soccer,” said Schulte. “Hopefully they keep that enthusiasm up. They’re the ones who are going to be leading the way over the next two years.”DILLEN MAYFIELDDerrick Forsythe photo.
