Warrenton Soccer Overcomes Offensive Woes

Falling stagnant after a solid start to the season, the Warrenton soccer team found itself leading some unpleasant statistical categories. Heading into last Thursday’s 3-0 win over St. Clair, the Warriors had posted the fewest goals and allowed more than any other team in the GAC. And while a pair of consecutive nonconference wins doesn’t help those particular numbers, it did restore the Warriors’ offensive energy. Like her teammates, senior Emily Craven had become frustrated with the drought and asserted herself against St. Clair. “It felt really good to get the win, because I know we were getting down about being in a slump,” said Craven, who netted two goals, narrowly missing a hat trick. She pressured the Bulldogs’ backfield the entire night, pushing her season total to 13 goals. “I’ve been working really hard at getting more shots on goal,” said Craven. But it was a multitude of players pursuing the goal that helped keep St. Clair back on its heels. “Lately, the other teams have had a defender who has pretty much shut us down,” said Coach David Evans. “Tonight we had multiple players attacking.” At times, Craven is forced to play all over the field. Against less competitive opponents, she is free to do what she does best. “Emily is a very strong player for us,” said Evans. “I’d really like to leave her up top, because she’s our best offensive threat. Tonight, we were able to leave her up there.” It still took a while for the Warriors to find the nets, leading just 1-0 at halftime. Senior Rachel Moritz scored first, before Craven got into the act under more favorable circumstances in the final 40 minutes. “In the second half we had a lot more advantage with the wind to our back,” said Evans. “The plays really started opening up and giving us a lot more space. Then, we were able to get a lot more offense.” Evans says the Warriors have been focusing on making productive passes rather than just booting the ball around the field and trying to maintain possession. “We’ve got to put passes together and make the passes to our teammates,” said Evans. “We can’t just kick the ball in a general direction.” He was pleased to see the work put into practice come to fruition. “What we talked about doing at the beginning of the game is what the girls really worked on trying to execute,” said Evans. “Defensively, we started working on some new stuff and finally got some practice.”
