While not able to finish the conference season with a victory, Coach David Evans is still confident in his Warrenton soccer team’s position heading into the Class 3 District 8 Tournament on Monday. The Warriors drew the No. 3 seed and will meet second-seeded Hannibal in hopes of avenging a 2-1 setback from earlier in the season.“I’m excited about the opportunity to play them again,” said Evans. “Hopefully with the extra practice time we’ve had we can capitalize a little bit more this time.”Warrenton enters the postseason after having fallen to Orchard Farm 2-1 in penalty kicks last Friday to close the GAC schedule at 4-5.“It was a real good game going back and forth,” said Evans. “Both teams had control of the ball and good opportunities at the net.”Junior Colleen Bayer was tripped on a breakaway attempt in the first half and was awarded a penalty kick on which she converted. In the middle of the second half Orchard Farm responded by placing the ball over goalkeeper Kalee Kelly’s reach and notching the game at 1-1.“Our girls were on target, but it just wasn’t enough to get past the goalie,” said Evans. “Their goalie made good reads and saves against us. You have to give them credit for that.”The two teams needed extra to decide their previous meetings as well, with Warrenton winning 3-2.“It would have been a big conference win for us, because it would have locked us in third place,” said Evans. “They’re very comparable to us, and that showed again.”Now the Warriors turn their focus on the postseason and utilizing the progress they have made since falling to Hannibal during Week One.“Right now our biggest strength going into districts is the girls have a good understanding of where we’re at skill wise,” said Evans. “We’re not going to play outside of our means. If we can’t beat them at skill, we’re going to beat them with intensity and run them.”WARRIORS ENTER DISTRICTS AS NO. 3 SEEDDerrick Forsythe photo.
