Struggling to pick a player of the game following his team's 3-2 victory over Winfield, Coach David Evans was resigned to complimenting his entire team on a stellar performance. It had been two seasons since the Warrenton soccer team had beaten its GAC conference foe, and this win should have substantial bearing on the Warriors' district seed."It was a game where so many of the girls played their best game of the year," said Evans. "The game ball goes to the player who steps up and plays their best game, and tonight it was a combination of players."Having fallen to Winfield to in the previous meeting, they returned to practice and shore up the gaps and claim their fourth conference victory — after having finished winless in league play last season."The girls played well tonight," said Evans. "We kept the ball in their half and put together a lot of small passes. It was something we've worked on in practice and is so nice to see implemented into the game."Macie Sommer was acknowledged by her teammates following the game, having netted the final two goals to keep Winfield at bay.Junior Colleen Bayer put the Warriors on the board first, booting in a pass from sophomore Brittney Glazebrook midway through the first half."Colleen last year came in as a defender, and developed offense with her speed," said Evans. "She moved to forward during her club season and is doing a good job for us there this season."Winfield countered to deadlock the game at 1-1 by halftime."We had a little more offense tonight and had a few better shots than we've been getting," said Evans. "It's nice to see them working hard and it paying off."Warrenton was able to lock down and control the possession for much of the second half, keeping the pressure off goalkeeper Kalee Kelly."The defense played a lot more secure and didn't let the girls get any breaks," said Evans.About 20 minutes into the second half Sommer took a quick pass from Bayer and delivered the ball into the side net.She followed soon after by dribbling to the top of the box and again beating the goalie."If the girls would compare the two games against Winfield, they would see how much better they did at getting to the first ball and taking away passes tonight," said Evans. He is anticipating the Warriors will receive a No. 3 seed in districts, meaning a rematch against Hannibal, which Warrenton lost to by one goal earlier this season.WARRENTON SOCCER NABS FOURTH GAC WINDerrick Forsythe photo.
