Warrenton Soccer Finishes Road Trip

The past five days have been a rigorous stretch for the Warrenton soccer team, which has played three exhausting road games.Challenging weather and long trips have taken their toll on the Warriors, who finished 1-2 over the course of their schedule.“It’s been a long week of a lot of playing and not a whole lot of practicing,” said Coach David Evans. The latest outcome was a 1-0 loss at St. Clair on Tuesday.“The girls came out flat during the first half,” said Evans. “We were late getting started, so it was a frustrating evening.”The Warriors gave up the only goal midway through the first half, despite limiting their opponent’s touches.Evans says the second half was much improved defensively, but his team struggled to generate any type of offensive threat.“We were able to dominate in the second half, only allowing them to get on our side maybe five times,” added Evans. “Lately we’ve been kind of a second half team, and we can’t afford to play quiet in the first half.”The setback came one night after the Warriors lost a 3-0 decision at Union, again unable to muster an offensive prowess.“Right now one of the big things I need to see is senior leadership step up,” said Evans. “We need some of the girls to fill some roles and get others pumped up.”Scoring has come primarily from two players, freshman Brittany Glazebrook and senior Sam Swoboda.“We’ve had plenty of opportunities but we just haven’t been able to put anything solid on goal in most games,” said Evans.Warrenton has been limited with just 14 girls on the varsity roster.Glazebrook was responsible for four goals during the Warriors’ 10-0 victory over Fulton on Friday. Evans also complimented the play of Danielle Duello.Despite the blowout result, Evans says his team again got off to a slow start, exiting the half with a different approach.“In the second half we were on,” said Evans of his team’s win over Fulton. “The girls relaxed and were fun to watch. It was nice to see them relax and start hitting their shots.”Evans says his team was desperately awaiting taking the day off from games on Wednesday to regroup before meeting Washington on Thursday.WARRENTON SOCCERBill Battle Photo.
