Warrenton Soccer Faces Pair of Close Defeats

The offensive woes continued on Tuesday night for the Warrenton soccer team, which is still looking for its second win of the season. The Warriors fell to 0-2 in conference play, losing another close match while they search for an identity on the scoring end. Coach David Evans says the team is still struggling to find a predecessor for record-holder Emily Craven, who was a reliable source of points last season. The latest setback was a 1-0 loss against Winfield, which followed a 1-0 defeat to Orchard Farm in double overtime on Friday.“As the level of competition increases, our number of opportunities decreases,” lamented Evans. “Some of the girls seem like they’re too nervous to shoot if it’s not a perfect look.”He says his team will have to start taking risks if it looks to become competitive.Right now the Warriors are dealing with both a stagnant offense and an abundance of injuries.Kayla Bargetzi is out with a knee injury, and freshman standout Brittany Glazebrook missed Tuesday’s match with a bruised foot.“We’ve had to bring up a few JV girls that should see some varsity time by next year,” said Evans. “In the meantime, we need them to step up and help us out with depth.”Solid defense has kept the Warriors in contention, but on Friday Evans says his team let the game last longer than it should have.“We let the outcome be decided by the officials call by letting the match get into double overtime,” said Evans. “While it may not have been the right call, we’ve got to finish it when we’ve got a chance in regulation.”For the first time this season he saw his team play a complete game, providing a consistent effort.“We were able to minimize their shots and get into their half of the field quite a bit,” said Evans. “We’re holding opponents to fewer points than in recent seasons, but we can’t keep putting all the pressure on the defense.”The Warriors had multiple scoring looks in the second half against Orchard Farm but were unable to convert.“We had the wind working with us on offense, but we don’t have anybody stepping up,” said Evans.Glazebrook has proven to be a primary offensive threat early in her freshman season, but teams are already recognizing her talent and designating defenders for the purpose of befuddling her.“She has to keep working hard, because she knows the challenges she faces trying to overcome the other team’s best players,” said Evans. With Glazebrook out on Tuesday, more responsibility fell on senior Sam Swoboda, who had perhaps the Warriors best chance at scoring.“She put one off the post that was just a few inches away,” said Evans. “Other than that, we had a couple series near the end where we had two or three hard, low shots.”He says Danielle Duello has also helped to provide a scoring threat, trying to take advantage of crosses.“The potential is there, but we’ve just got to fine-tune a couple of things,” said Evans. “We had quite a few crosses through the middle but didn’t have the girls there in time to finish them.”With two more GAC contests awaiting against St. Charles and St. Charles West later this week, Evans says there’s little time for adjustments.“If this program wants to grow, it’s going to happen in the offseason,” said Evans. “Until they start committing to it and making it a priority, it’s going to be tough to get to that next stage.”WARRENTON SOCCERDerrick Forsythe Photo.
