With 45 athletes filtering into practice this preseason, depth has not been a concern for the Warrenton soccer team.Coach David Evans is excited about being able to field three complete teams, freshmen through varsity.“This should give the younger girls a chance to develop before moving to the varsity level,” said Evans.Warrenton is coming off a losing season, and Evans says his goal is to improve incrementally on an annual basis.“We’d like to be around .500,” said Evans. “With some of the young talent we have, we could be looking at conference and maybe even district recognition.”One major concern for the Warriors is replacing record-breaking scorer Emily Craven, who netted a program-best 21 goals last season.“It’s kind of nerve-wracking not knowing who will do the scoring, but with Sam Swoboda’s speed at the top she should be a big contributor,” said Evans.A three-year starter, Swoboda netted three goals last season.“We’re hoping for a lot of offense out of her this year,” said Evans. “Being a senior she’s got more confidence this year.”Evans is also excited about the potential of three freshmen, who bring a considerable amount of select ball experience to the program.“It’s going to be a well-rounded attack, and we’ll be looking for goals out of everybody,” said Evans.Brittany Glazebrook, Colleen Bayer and Macey Sommer will be counted on to make an immediate impact.“They play on high-caliber club teams and are able to control the middle of the field,” said Evans.Warrenton will also have a new goalie in place this year, with Julia Crossen taking over in the net.“She played a lot of indoor with the girls during the offseason and showed signs of being strong,” said Evans. “She’s a lot more vocal than some of the goalies we’ve had in the past.”Also, returning with experience are a pair of defenders, including senior Morgan Cupp at stopper and sophomore Tiffany Fleahman at sweeper.Kayla Bargetzi, Kelsey Schneider and Sam Douglas will provide depth on the defensive end.Along with the freshmen in the middle of the field, Rachel Hertel brings experience after netting a pair of goals last season. Danielle Duello also returns from a year ago, as well as Tyler Gregory and Courtney Gregory.“We’re not going to be a possession team that works around the other team,” said Evans. “We’re going to be workhorses.”The Warriors open the season this Wednesday, when they host St. Clair and Sullivan in tournament play. Warrenton will play at 6 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday.SAM SWOBODADerrick Forsythe Photo.
