Warrenton Selects Spoonster as New AD

Bobby Spoonster is coming home.Warrenton High School has chosen the alum as its new activities director, approving his hiring during last Thursday’s monthly board meeting.A 1998 graduate of WHS, Spoonster will replace Craig Frazier, who hasheld the role for the past five years.“I’m excited about the opportunity,” said Spoonster. “I’ve got a lot of work ahead of me.”Principal Jeremy Way says a panel that included incoming superintendent Jim Chandler selected Spoonster from the final field of nearly 50 applicants.“We had many quality candidates,” said Way. “I think Dr. Chandler was definitely big on bringing in someone who is from the area.”This will be Spoonster’s first administrative role, following an accomplished coaching career. He has been the girls head basketball coach at Bowling Green since 2009.Prior to that, he served as girls basketball coach at Clopton for three seasons. Spoonster was an assistant on the 2005 Clopton team that won the Class 2 state title. As a head coach, he has amassed a 159-38 record, winning five district titles. He led Clopton to a pair of third-place finishes in the Class 2 state playoffs.“He’s got a lot of coaching experience,” said Way. “He knows what it’s like to coach during all the seasons, and he understands what it takes to evaluate programs.”Spoonster says while he’ll no longer be on the sidelines calling plays, he will not abandon the competitive aspect of athletics that he enjoys.“Now I have the opportunity to be competitive on a much larger scale, because I want every program in our school to be successful, and I’m going to work to achieve that,” said Spoonster. He feels this role will better accommodate his growing family, which includes four young children.“This will allow me to not be out as many nights coaching as many sports or having a game every night of the week,” said Spoonster. One of his primary goals is determining how to make Warrenton a consistent competitor in the GAC in each program or sport.“Something that concerns me is seeing our teams settle for mediocrity,” said Spoonster, referring to an article he read in The Record in which an athlete implied WHS teams have become complacent with having average or losing seasons.“If that’s the way our players feel, that concerns me,” he asserted. “That’s a mindset we have to change.”Way says one of his expectations for the AD position is to find ways to improve participation numbers and increase interest in the school’s extracirricular programs.“Getting more kids involved is one of our top goals,” Way acknowledged.Spoonster says he’s been a part of two very spirited schools around which the community rallies. As a graduate of WHS, he would like to see that same support develop in Warrenton.“In a community this size, the school is still the primal part of the community, and that’s something we’ve got to be cognicant of,” said Spoonster.“We want to give the people something they can be proud of.”Spoonster will also serve as assistant principal.
