Record Managing EditorWarrenton is asking for public input to develop the city’s vision and development guide for the future. As part of the ongoing process to update the city’s comprehensive plan, an online survey is now available to gather feedback.Have you taken the Comprehensive Plan Survey yet? If not, visit: www.surveymonkey.com/s/Warrenton_PlanA comprehensive plan is a tool used to set community goals and to handle future growth and development. It will cover areas such as land use, character, transportation, neighborhoods, parks and trails, infrastructure and implementation. The survey asks residents what the best qualities of Warrenton are, why they live in the city, and allows them to rate government services among other questions.Links to the online survey can be found at warrentonplan.org or the city’s Facebook page. The survey only takes a few minutes to complete. As of Monday morning, 117 surveys had been completed. The deadline to fill out the survey is Monday, May 25.Director of Operations/Finance Officer Terri Thorn said the survey is open to city residents and those residing outside the city limits. She encourages the public to take time and provide their input.“It’s really about the community and the area,” she said. “We are trying to get feedback from the entire area.”The process to update the comprehensive plan started in recent weeks with several meetings held with key stakeholders in the community and members of the planning advisory committee.Three public meetings will also be held this year to gather input, though no specific dates have been set.The plan is being developed by Kansas City-based Vireo for $90,000.“We want to ensure that everyone’s voice is included,” Thorn said. The city’s current comprehensive plan is 15 years old. Since then, the city’s population exploded. The city’s population expanded by 48 percent from 1990 to 2000 and grew another 40 percent from 2000 to 2008, officials said. The current population is estimated to be 7,880.Officials are expecting more growth in the future.“It’s a living document,” Thorn said about the plan. “This creates a direction for the next 20-plus years, but in order to make it effective it will need to be updated as changes are made in the community. It’s a plan for the future.”Thorn said the city has appreciated the amount of involvement and response so far from the public.“We never suspected going into this that all those individuals with the exception of a few were willing to come and share their thoughts and be part of it,” she said. “We are thankful for that.”Warrenton seeks input on comprehensive plan survey
