The city of Warrenton is seeking over $476,000 in state grant funding to assist with construction of a sidewalk on Veterans Memorial Parkway, west of Highway 47.
Warrenton Director of Operations Brandie Walters said the funding would assist in a construction project stretching from Market Street to Rural King. The city is currently installing new stormwater pipes in the drainage ditches along the road. That will allow sidewalk to be built over top of where the ditches used to be.
“The project is approximately $822,000. We’re submitting to the grant a request for $476,988,” Walters said. “The city matching portion (would be) $345,000, which is currently in our budget.”
The sidewalk aspect qualifies the project for funding by the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP), a state-administered grant program that helps local towns fund alternatives to automobile travel.
The amount of funds available for the TAP program were reduced this year because of limited funding from the federal government, said Chad Eggen with Boonslick Regional Planning Commission. He commented that about $442,000 was allotted for MoDOT’s entire Northeast District this year. Eggen that's an unusually low amount because the state usually releases two years of funding at a time, but is only making one year of funding available at this time.
In light of that reduced funding, city aldermen asked Eggen on Jan. 19 if their request for a larger project has a good chance of getting some funding approved.
“I think it’s a good application. ... It’s a good project,” Eggen replied. It completes pedestrian sidewalk installation in that area of the city and connects downtown Warrenton to retail outlets at the Shoppes at Warrenton mall, he said.
Alderman Gary Auch commented that some residents near Veterans Memorial Parkway have complained that construction along the road had taken down fencing between the parkway and Interstate 70. City Administrator Terri Thorn replied that a different project, installing a new sewer line, was likely responsible, and that the fencing would be replaced.
