Creativity and excitement was abound at Rebecca Boone Elementary on Sunday, Feb. 25, as Warrenton Cub Scouts pack 983 hosted its annual Blue and Gold ceremony and Pinewood Derby.A few dozen Scouts raced their custom-made cars in hopes of earning bragging rights for the next year. It was part of their fundraising efforts and an opportunity to recognize those who will be advancing to the Boy Scout level soon.“It’s a great event of the kids, and we’re able to raise money for their scouting adventures,” said Pack Leader Chris Bushman.The rules for racing are fairly simple. The scouts start with a regulation size woodblock and chisel, carve and design their way down to a car. The only stipulation is that the car must weigh no more than 5 ounces.The Cub Scouts typically have about 20 members.“It’s a fun day to come out and race,” said Bushman. “These types of events help the pack with their expenses. The whole goal is to teach them how to become young men.”Cub Scouts includes first through fifth grade, with kindergarten soon to be added. The Cub Scout rank includes Tigers and Webelos and are associated by the grade they’re in.A Cub Scout official said they try to develop a program that involves fishing derbies and family camp outs.Traditionally, Cub Scouts will work their way toward Boy Scouts, during which they’ll eventually have the opportunity to earn Eagle Scout rank.Scouts need to dedicate service hours and earn merit badges for rank advancements.
