Warrenton junior Madeline Carlson exhibited the progress she made over the offseason during Saturday’s Clayton Invitational at Forest Park.Finishing ninth among 221 runners, she shaved 40 seconds off her time from the same course a year ago, recording a 20:29.“That really shows well for this early in the season,” said Spoede. “You’ve got to pay some dues to be running this well right off the bat.”Carlson was the Warriors’ only varsity competitor in the girls’ race. However, she could expect to see freshman Andrea Poole lining up alongside her in future races, following a first-place finish in the junior varsity meet. Poole bested 195 runners with a 21:33.“It was a really exciting day for her,” said Spoede. “That will probably be her last JV race of the season.”Meghan Sanders also placed near the top of the event in 36th, clocking a 24:22.Freshman Emma Housewright landed in 121st with a 27:17, while sophomore Mackenzie Miller ran a 28:15 to place 145th.“Being under 30:00 for the first 5K is a good start,” noted Spoede. In the boys varsity race, Warrenton had more representation but no medalists.Senior Jacob Ruby led the team with a 167th-place finish, running a 19:30.Senior Triston Cullom crossed in 21:21, placing 257th, while James Goetz was two spots behind at21:26.“The guys have got some work to do to get where we need to be for conference and districts,” said Spoede.Warrenton fielded a complete team in the junior varsity boys race, which featured 427 competitors.Ben Hoelscher finished 149th with a 21:34 to lead the Warriors.Alex Holloway ran a 22:21, taking 205th.Brendan McBride logged a 23:29, while Austin Adams finished in 23:40.Michael Morhman rounded out the Warriors’ effort with a 34:16 during his first 5K race.“Just for them to see the excitement and magnitude of the event, instead of going to a little meet, was really important,” said Spoede.Warrenton will travel to the Fulton Invitational on Saturday.
