If Warrenton residents violate nuisance codes for trash, weeds and unlicensed vehicles, they will have less time to clean it up. Residents will no longer receive a seven-day courtesy notice for trash, weeds and unlicensed vehicles. Now, they will immediately receive a 10-day notice of violation. If the violation goes ignored, property owners will receive a summons.Alderman Gary Auch, Ward 2, introduced the topic of messy properties at the board of aldermen meetings in August. He had said the city needed to have a mechanism in place to motivate property owners to clean up their lots.At issue are homes where trash, furniture and excess junk accumulates and sits for long periods. The revised nuisance policy states that notices will be posted on the property that’s been cited, so neighbors are aware that notice has been given. From April 2015 to August 2016, the city sent 593 courtesy notices. “Of those, only 141 notices of violations and 76.25 percent responded in 10 days, so I think that part is working,” said Jack Hanff, the city’s zoning officer and building commissioner.“Trash, unlicensed vehicles and weeds are always the top three,” he explained.Hanff said when residents contact the city and show good faith that they are trying to resolve the issue, the city works with them.City of Warrenton
