As he prepares to host the Class 3 District 2 Tournament this weekend, Warrenton wrestling coach Kevin Fowler is trying to fill the gaps in his own lineup. The Warriors will likely put nine competitors on the mats when action kicks off Friday at 5:30 p.m.“Team-wise it’s going to be hard to compete with some of those kids in the lineup,” said Fowler. “We’re there for a chance to advance to the state tournament.”Fowler is optimistic that as many as seven could move on,with a more realistic number landing in the three to four range. Competitors must finish among the Top 4 in their weight class to advance.“Nobody is outclassed,” said Fowler. “Some of the kids will have an uphill battle, but they can definitely compete for a spot.”The Warriors were fortunate to slide into the University City Tournament last weekend, after having to cancel a home meet due to winter weather.Fowler says it turned out to be a very positive experience for his team, as Warrenton went 4-1. The Warriors defeated Festus, Soldan, Sullivan and the host team, before losing to Desoto.“This is a real good tournament for us, especially this year,” said Fowler. “Everybody could compete and had a chance for some success.”Dan Filipek and Dylan Wade each finished undefeated, claiming tournament titles.Filipek had three pins before beating a state medalist 1-0 in his final match at 145 pounds.“That was a good matchup for him,” said Fowler. “It’s always impressive to get a win over a medalist.”At 152 pounds, Wade has really peaked lately, and went 3-0 on Saturday with two pins and win by decision.“He’s really wrestling up a weight class and has been impressive,” said Fowler. “When he’s wrestling at his best, he’s tough to beat.”Jacob Manion also performed well for the Warriors, going 4-1 with a loss against Desoto at 182 pounds.Dominic Kennedy finished 3-1, collecting two pins and a major at 106 pounds.“He’s wrestling really well right now,” said Fowler.Seth Brierly didn’t fair as well overall, going 2-2, but Fowler says his wins were pivotal.“Without his pins against Festus and Sullivan, we don’t win those two duals,” said Fowler. While he only got two matches in, going 1-1 at University City, Dakota Werner is expected to advance this weekend in the 120-pound bracket.“He’s looking for a return to state, so we expect big things out of him,” said Fowler. While it’s only his first year on varsity, Fowler believes 132-pounder Drake Meine has a chance to push through his weight class as well.“He’s got a favorable bracket, and I definitely think he’s capable,” said Fowler. At 138 pounds, James Biship will also be battling for a spot in the state tournament.Fowler says the Warriors will add freshman Brendon Cotner into the mix at the heavyweight position.“He’ll be gaining experience and can help us out as a team,” said Fowler. Those that advance will wrestle at the MSHSAA Championships at Mizzou Arena in Columbia beginning next Thursday, Feb. 20.
Warrenton will host the Class 3 District 2 Tournament beginning Friday and finishing on Saturday. The top four competitors in each weight class will advance to state.
