It’s pretty easy to sum up the game between the Elsberry Post 226 A team and Warrenton Post 122 on Monday – Elsberry hit the ball where defenders weren’t – Warrenton hit the ball right to the defense.
That scenario led to an 8-0 loss for Post 122. The loss dropped Warrenton to 5-4 in district play.
Despite the loss, Manager Ken Dildine believes his team is still in a good position for a top seed for the district tournament with two district games left.
“They started off kind of slow on offense this year, but through the course of the year and with the discipline they’ve had, it’s coming together,” Dildine said. “With three games left in districts, I’m not looking to lose another. We’re looking to get to that top seed.”
Warrenton managed just two hits on the evening. Its biggest offensive threat came in the top of the fifth inning, when Cameron Swaringan and Manny Raygoza drew walks to start the inning.
But Elsberry pitcher Dane Stuckey got a strikeout and two ground ball outs to end the inning and the threat.
Elsberry scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI base hit by Hunter Smith and an RBI knock to left by Remington Feldewerth. Another run scored on the play due to a Warrenton miscue defensively.
Elsberry tacked on insurance runs in the third, fourth and sixth innings to seal the win.
“It was just one of those nights,” Dildine said. “The boys have worked hard all year and it’s a hard thing to swallow. We didn’t have a lot of strikeouts and we put the ball in play. Baseball gods weren’t with us today, I guess you could say. That’s the game of baseball. You find the gaps, you win. You hit right at them, you don’t.”
The Warrenton defense struggled at times in the game, but Dildine said he believes Warrenton’s defense is one of the best in the district.
“These boys have fought long and hard this year,” Dildine said. “I told the boys and I think they proved it today that this defense is probably the best in the district. I will back it up anytime against anybody.”
For Warrenton, Kole Hammerberg and Adrian Ochoa had hits on the evening.
On the mound for Warrenton, Swaringan allowed eight hits and struck out three in the loss.
Warrenton has three district meetings left in the regular season, including a matchup against St. Charles on Thursday.
