The Warrenton Police Department will kick off a new community outreach program this month with an open gym night at Warrenton High School. The event will take place Saturday, Feb. 23, from 5-7 p.m. It will feature officers playing sports with students at the high school gym.“There will be basketball, dodgeball, all that kind of stuff,” said Warrenton Police Chief Larry Ellard.Ellard discussed plans for the public outreach program during a public meeting Feb. 5. He said the police department is looking for activities to engage in with the community.Officers also have reached out to leadership programs at Warrenton schools, he said, to ask students to give their thoughts on potential events. A group of students met with officers in late January.“(The students) are interested in taking a leadership role in the community outreach program,” he said, including volunteering their time to help with events.Ellard said anyone who wants to participate in the open gym night will have to complete a liability waiver, which can be picked up at the Warrenton police station, or by talking to a school resource officer or other police officer.Warrenton Police patch
