Record Managing EditorPlans are underway for a new special event in Warrenton later this year. The city will sponsor the first Gobble Giveaway on Saturday, Nov. 21, at city hall. The event is expected to be similar to the electronic giveaway sponsored by the city at Hometown Christmas last year. That turned out to be very popular as the city raffled off 125 electronic items valued between $20 and $400. Almost 600 people registered for the free giveaway. At last Tuesday’s board of aldermen meeting, members approved using $14,000 from the tourism budget to support the event. Of that amount, $10,000 would be used for the prizes. Other plans will likely include pumpkin bowling and childrens’ crafts.“(The Tourism Commission) really wanted an event on a different night so they are not competing for people to come to our city against the Jonesburg parade, an event that has been held for quite a few years,” said Terri Thorn, director of operations/finance officer. In all, aldermen last Tuesday voted 4-0 to approve $15,800 in funding requests from the tourism budget. Ward 1 Alderman Karen Casserly and Ward 2 Alderman Damion Frederick were absent from the meeting.Besides the city’s request, $600 was approved for three businesses — Relax Inn, Holiday Inn and FastLane Convenience Stores — to cover a portion of the Interstate 70 attraction signs. In other news• Aldermen awarded a bid for road salt to Lange-Stegmann Co., of St. Louis, and for cinders to Engemann, of Marthasville. The salt bid was $74 per ton and was cheaper than a second bid submitted by Gunther Salt Co., of St. Louis, at $105 per ton. For cinders, Engemann submitted a bid of $14. Other bids were received from Tri-County Trucking, Hermann ($14) and Bobby Hoelscher Trucking, Warrenton ($17.50).The city will initially purchase 100 tons of salt and cinders for a combined cost of $8,800. The city has $20,000 budgeted for winter supplies.• The city will spend $22,298 to purchase a new mid-mount, zero-turn mower from Mordt Tractor, of Warrenton. The winning bid, approved by a 4-0 vote, was slightly higher than the budgeted amount of $22,100. The difference will be covered by existing funds in the grounds and maintenance department. Other bids were submitted by Modern Farm Equipment Company, Fulton ($23,000), Moridge Manufacturing (Moundridge, Kan. ($24,994). A fourth bid from Dyer Rents, of Wentzville, did not meet the bid specifications.• The board approved a change order in the amount of $44,060 requested by Gonzalez Companies for work related to improvements to the city’s wastewater system. The contracted amount increased to $1,231,600.• Gary Grant was hired as a meter reader and Joshua Redmond as a construction maintenance crew worker in the public works department. Both will be paid $12 an hour. They started work Aug. 26.• Jason Hanner was hired as a police officer and will begin work Sept. 7. He will be paid $17.23 an hour.Warrenton
