The Warrenton Board of Aldermen has chosen not to appoint a representative to a committee that hopes to bring a trade-oriented community college to Warren County.Local business leaders have been organizing a committee since October to explore the possibility of building a new St. Charles Community College (SCC) campus somewhere in Warren County. The committee will include representatives of local governments and school districts. The push for a college campus initially started with state Rep. Bryan Spencer, whose district includes Wright City and Wentzville.Warrenton aldermen chose not to join the college initiative with a 5-1 vote during a public meeting Jan. 16.“The businesses and manufacturers here locally are looking for trade and (vocational) tech training, which I don’t believe that’s, at least what I understand, what Rep. Spencer was proposing,” said Ward 1 Alderman Greg Costello. However, advocates including Spencer and representatives of the Greater Warren County Economic Development Council have previously stated that the focus of the college campus would be to teach trade, technical and manufacturing skills.Costello also said it isn’t the city government’s role to advocate for something that would affect the taxes of local school districts.Bringing an SCC campus to Warren County would require a public vote to join SCC’s taxing district. Warren County R-III and Wright City R-II school districts would have to bring that vote to the public.Ward 1 Alderman Mike Shilharvey was the sole vote in favor of joining the committee studying the college proposal.“The city, the residents should have somebody representing the city on that (committee), if nothing else than for informational purposes,” Shilharvey said. The Warrenton Board of Aldermen meets the first and third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in Warrenton City Hall. Meetings are open to the public and include time for public comment. The next meeting is Feb. 6.Warrenton city hall sign
