The Warrenton football team opened up conference play with a 40-15 win tonight in a road game against Winfield Sept.19.
Starting off the game strong, the Warrenton Warriors quickly added six points on the board after quarterback Christian Blondin threw a 54-yard pass to Deadrick Forrest.
Warrenton went for two-points but did not convert.
The momentum did not stop there as the special teams forced a turnover in the next play to put Warrenton at the 30-yard line.
Forrest kept pressuring the defense and added another touchdown — this time on a 23-yard run.
Again, Warrenton went for two but they were unable to convert.
The defense made a big play after Javon Jones sacked the quarterback which led to a fumble that Jake Mincher recovered deep in Winfield’s territory.
Winfield later took it to the red-zone. However, Hayden Johnson put a stop to any hope Winfield had with a pick in the end zone.
The first quarter ended with Warrenton leading 12-0.
Starting the second quarter, Blondin rushed for a two-yard touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good.
Defensively, Jones, Keegan Mellegaard, JaMarion Fulton and Eli Schneider each collected a sack in the second quarter.
Forrest came up with a huge play with a 91-yard touchdown reception.
Less than a minute to go, Forrest collected a 14-yard touchdown reception and Isias Hernadez scored on the two--point conversion to put the Warriors up 32-0 at halftime.
In the third, Jay Sanders collected a sack, and Blondin and Forrest connected once again for another touchdown. Bradley Tucker scored the two-point conversion.
Winfield broke up the shutout on two rushing touchdowns -- a 29-yard run and a three-yard run.
Warrenton improved to a 1-0 record in the GAC North and a 3-1 overall record.
They will play at St. Charles West next Thursday at 7 p.m.
