WARRENTON – The Warrenton volleyball team couldn’t cook up another comeback.
One day after rallying to beat Troy in their postseason opener, the host Warriors dropped in two sets against Hannibal, 15-25, 21-25, in the semifinals of the Class 4 District 8 Tournament last Wednesday (Oct. 30).
Junior outside hitter Morgan Frye led Warrenton offensively with eight kills versus the Pirates and added one block, five service points and an ace.
Sophomore outside hitter Josey Schipper had three service points, an ace and two kills. Sophomore setter Abby Hammerberg had 14 assists and three service points.
Senior Kate Kilpatrick had two service points and an ace and junior Kassidy Haller chipped in with three kills.
The loss finalized Warrenton’s record at 16-15-2 for the 2019 campaign. It’s the seventh consecutive year the program has finished with a winning season.
It was also the final game in a Warriors’ jersey for seniors Kilpatrick, Miranda Nelson and Tiffany Meine.
The future seems promising though as Coach Randy Kindschuh’s young squad should return a majority of its roster for next year, which includes current juniors Frye, Haller, Jazzy McCuskey, Ashley Pullen, Allie Gerard and Faith Wenzel, and current sophomores Schipper, Hammerberg, Alyssa Bruce, Ella Smith and Olivia Morgan.
Top-seeded Hannibal improved to 19-10-2 with its victory over the Warriors, but the Pirates’ campaign only lasted one day longer as they were thwarted in two sets, 23-25, 17-25, by No. 2 Hickman in the title game on Thursday.
The lengthy trips up and down Interstate 70 were worth it for the Kewpies who secured their first district championship since 2007 and never lost a set during their time in Warrenton, knocking off No. 3 Rock Bridge 25-15, 25-22 in the semifinals.
Alas, the postseason is fleeting and volleyball has already come to a close for Hickman as well. The Kewpies beat Ritenour in two sets in the sectional opener Saturday, but fell to the host Francis Howell Central Spartans 12-25, 23-25 in the quarterfinals later in the day.
Taking down Hickman booked Francis Howell Central its first-ever state tournament appearance.
The Spartans (19-5-2) will begin pool play versus Nixa (34-4) this Friday at Cape Girardeau’s Show-Me Center. Lafayette (30-8) and Liberty KC (28-7) also qualified for the Class 4 final four, which wraps up Saturday.
