Warrenton Netters Lose at St. Charles West

The implications of Tuesday’s defeat at St. Charles West made the disappointment more unbearable than any other loss this season.A befuddling two-set loss (25-21, 25-9) most likely eliminated Warrenton from the GAC race, which it had a hold of a short week ago.“The girls are extremely disappointed, because they knew we needed to win this game to even have a chance,” said Coach Kristen Van Horn.Since claiming redemption against Winfield last Tuesday, Coach Kristen Van Horn has witnessed her team suffer an identity crisis.“Coming off the Winfield game, our girls were on such a high that I think they may have been thinking, ‘Hey, we’ve got (the conference), and didn’t come in prepared,” said Van Horn. The Warriors have not exhibited the same poise, leadership and finishing ability as during a 13-5 start to the season. With just two regular season contests remaining next week, Warrenton will need to return to form quickly in order to be a contender in districts.Early on, it appeared the Warriors were going to fare well against the same St. Charles West team they had beaten in two sets on Sept. 19.“The last time we played them, we made it look simple,” said Van Horn. “This was completely different.”Warrenton held a slight advantage at 6-4, before the rhythm of the game shifted strongly into the host team’s hands. After offsetting an 8-8 tie, St. Charles West rallied to gain control.“We were getting scared with Kacy Eschweiler in the front row,” said Van Horn.Warrenton tied the match again at 17-17 before allowing three unanswered points.“They were really tipping on us,” said Van Horn. “It’s something we’d been working on, but unfortunately we’re not a tipping team. We’re a hitting team.”Instead of rebounding in the second set, the Warriors appeared to fold.St. Charles West promptly jumped ahead 11-2, and Warrenton never threatened the remainder of the way.“It seems like we’ve developed a tendency of hanging our heads after the other teams score three or four straight points,” said Van Horn. “We just can’t seem to pick ourselves back up.”Van Horn says it appeared her team was playing timid, not wanting to become the aggressor.“It didn’t feel like we were playing with any sense of urgency,” said Van Horn. “Earlier in the season we were, and we need to become that team again.”Falling to 6-2 in the GAC, the Warriors will need help if they hope to claim the conference title. It will take an unlikely Winfield loss.
