The Warrenton volleyball team was bound and determined not to enter a third set with its county rival on Monday. The Warriors narrowly avoided that circumstance, battling back from a second-set deficit to defeat Wright City (25-22, 25-23).“We definitely didn’t want to go into a third set like we did last year,” acknowledged senior Daphne Meine. “Our goal tonight was to win in two sets, because we knew going into a third set would give them more confidence.”Warrenton controlled the first set, overcoming troublesome serving. After offsetting a 4-4 tie, the Warriors went ahead by eight points midway through the match.“In the first set, we were trying to let them make mistakes,” said Coach Kristen Van Horn. “We were finding good spots with the ball, especially those short corners. That really gave us the advantage.”Wright City was prepared to fire back, rattling off six unanswered points to notch the contest at 22-22.“Unfortunately, we missed way too many serves and that kind of allowed them to hang around,” said Van Horn. “We should have ran away with the game a lot more.”Warrenton escaped, but the Wildcats carried the momentum into the ensuing set.“Some of the younger players weren’t used to the crowd being so loud, so once they finally got used to it we were able to gain control,” explained Meine.Wright City jumped ahead 4-0, before the Warriors rallied to tie the match at 5-5.“In the second set, our girls were really tense,” said Van Horn. “They weren’t playing to their potential.”The Wildcats were able to regain the advantage and maintain a three to four-point lead until the tense closing moments.“They were picking on a couple of our girls on serve receive, and they got into our heads,” said Van Horn. “Our girls were thinking, ‘I can’t pass the ball, so don’t hit it to me.’”Warrenton scored the final five points of the match, tying Wright City at 23, before finishing strong.Meine, who led the Warriors with five kills, will be able to say she never lost a match against Wright City since the rivalry began her freshmen year.“After four years, it’s pretty impressive for us to keep the streak alive,” said Meine. “They’re our rivals, so we don’t want to ever lose to them. They’ve gotten a lot more competitive the past two years, but we’ve also stepped up our game.”Reckamp added four kills for Warrenton.
