Warrenton, MO Student Wins Bronze at World Championships

Miss Faith Van Horn, an incoming Warrenton High School Freshman, won a Bronze Medal in the 25th Annual Taekwondo World Championships held in Little Rock, Arkansas on July 10, 2015. Organizers for the event estimated a draw of close to 20,000 people from around the world for the week filled with activities that included martial arts seminars, special training sessions, and tournament competition.Miss Faith, a 2nd degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, entered the Combative Weapon Sparring competition ranked 7th in the World in her division based on age and belt rank. She fought her way through the tournament brackets to a 3rd place finish. This is Faith’s fourth consecutive year to compete for the World Champion title and the second time to earn a medal. In 2012, she earned a silver medal missing gold by a single point in a nail biting match that went into overtime.According to Faith’s Instructors, much of her success is due to her quick ability to adjust not only to her opponents, but also to her judges. Some judges are hesitant to recognize a block, or call a technical strike, if they feel the technique was not martial arts based. Faith is quick to recognize what in her arsenal is scoring and adapt her tactics accordingly. When asked if she will try for gold again, Faith answered a resounding “Yes!” She continued to explain, “It’s not just about winning the gold. That would be great of course! But it’s more about testing your physical limits, learning that you can still perform when you are tired, or sick, or even hurt, and knowing that you can continue if you need to. And when it comes to self defense and real life, that’s real important to know and remember.”Faith trains in Taekwondo and is in the Leadership Program at Excel Martial Arts located at the Warrenton Outlet Mall.
