Warrenton manages to stay above .500

By Derrick ForsytheRecord Staff WriterThe ability of the Warrenton volleyball team to adapt to constant change in personnel has been critical to its success this season. The Warriors have managed to stay above the .500 mark with a 12-10 record, but their lineup took another blow during the St. Clair Tournament over the weekend.Warrenton won 2-2-1, despite losing two of its starters to injuries. Senior Nicole Hardt and sophomore Sabrina McRoberts were both sidelined, minimizing the Warriors to just seven players.“For being shorthanded and the girls filling in so well at positions they had never played before, I thought they did great,” said first-year Coach Kristen McDowell. “The girls fought really hard considering everything they had to go through that day.”McRoberts was back on the court Monday, and Hardt is expected to return this week. However, the availability of veteran leader Morgan Boesel, who has been out two weeks with an ankle injury, is still to be determined.“I’m hopeful that we’ll have everybody back for districts, but I would like to see everybody healthy and ready to play next week against Winfield, because the girls want to beat them so badly,” said McDowell. The Warriors showed resilience on Saturday, rebounding from a tournament-opening loss to Pacific (23-25, 13-25).Warrenton split with Union (20-25, 25-21) in the second match, losing by virtue of point value.“It went back and forth the whole time,” said McDowell. “We would go on a big run and they would counter. We were up for nearly the entire second set, and the girls fought hard.”Warrenton took down St. James in two sets (27-25, 25-12) during the first match of bracket play.“Our defense was really great, and we had people playing positions they hadn’t,” said McDowell.“They made those adaptations and played hard.”The Warriors were then dealt a two-set defeat (25-21, 25-15) against Orchard Farm. Warrenton battled back and forth during the first set before falling behind by an insurmountable deficit during the second.“We dug ourselves into a hole we just couldn’t get out of, but I was still proud of the girls for not giving up,” said McDowell. The final match of the day resulted in a three-set victory (25-21, 19-25, 25-21) over Union.“It was a good day overall for us,” said McDowell. “I couldn’t have been happier with the girls’ effort.”She pointed out her team’s strengths as the Warriors approach the Class 3 District 7 Tournament at St. Charles West on Oct. 19.“We’re a very strong serving and serve-receive team,” said McDowell. “Our defense has also improved significantly since the beginning of the season.”
