Dalton Ross, 28, of Warrenton, was charged with one count of first-degree endangerment of a child in Warrenton stemming from a May 19 incident.
According to the probable cause statement filed by Detective James Plackemeier, Ross left the victim, and two other children, unsupervised in a running car with a loaded pistol for roughly 30 minutes while he spoke to two other individuals listed as witnesses on May 19.
The Ruger 9mm was in a holster with rounds in the magazine in the driver’s seat, according to a statement from Ross, and the victim got ahold of the weapon and discharged a round, shooting themselves in the leg. The victim was transported from the scene in an ambulance before being flown to a hospital in St. Louis and undergoing surgery to repair their femur.
According to one of the witnesses, this was the second incident where the victim had gotten their hands on a firearm and discharged a round, and said the victim “likes to play with guns.”
A warrant has been issued for Ross’ arrest and he is to be held without bond.
