Warrenton makes changes to sign regulations

Record Managing Editor Warrenton officials have approved significant changes to the way the city regulates certain signs. As part of the changes, a paid permit will no longer be needed for banner signs and the number of days a banner or temporary sign can be displayed has been eliminated. Previously, a banner sign could only be displayed if a $10 permit was paid and for a total of 56 days each year, according to Zoning Officer/Building Commissioner Jack Hanff. For temporary signs, such as a real estate signs, they previously could not be displayed longer than 90 days at a time.A business or organization could ask for an extension to have the sign displayed longer, but now that will no longer be needed under the new regulations. “The whole time I have been with the city I have never had a time where the board told anyone no,” Hanff said. “In reality, if they asked for it to be extended, they usually got permission for it.” The size requirement for banner and temporary signs has not changed and written permission will still be needed from the property owner where the signs are displayed. The minimum height for awning signs also was reduced, from 10 feet to 7 feet, Hanff noted. That immediately will help multiple businesses in the city where the existing framework on buildings did not allow for the taller height, he added. A public hearing was held on the proposed changes at the start of the July 15 board of aldermen meeting. The ordinance was later adopted by a unanimous vote of the board.
