Warrenton Lions Club donates dictionaries for students

The Warrenton Lions Club continues to work with Warrenton schools to provide take-home dictionaries to local students. This year was no exception, even with the challenges of pandemic protocols.

The club’s ongoing commitment to The Dictionary Project, a national campaign that helps get lifetime learning off to an early start, recently helped place dictionaries in the hands of more than 200 Warrenton area third-grade students attending Daniel Boone, Rebecca Boone and Warrior Ridge elementary schools, and Holy Rosary School.

Normally Lions Club volunteers deliver the books in person and enjoy visiting classrooms, but this school year they delivered the books to school offices for teachers to distribute to each student.

“Showing the books to students in their classrooms is my favorite part,” said Warrenton Lions Club President Don Eichorn. “This year we really missed those classroom moments. We generally have a chance to point out many special resource sections you don’t find in every dictionary – plus we get a kick out of pointing out the longest word in the English language. It takes up a whole page!”

Third grade is often perceived as the dividing line between learning to read and reading to learn, so the Warrenton Lions make it a priority to provide dictionaries to these children. “We didn’t want students to miss out just because there was a pandemic,” Eichorn says.

Warrenton Lions provide these books for each child to own, to use at each teacher’s discretion, and to take home and use for a lifetime. During the past 10+ years the Warrenton Lions have purchased and distributed more than 2,400 dictionaries.

“We are grateful for the support of school administrators and teachers who make our project welcome in their classrooms,” said Eichorn. “We are also gratified by the support of Warrenton community members who support our fundraising efforts and make it possible for us to purchase the books.”

The goal of the project is to help all students become good writers, active readers, creative thinkers, and resourceful learners. The Dictionary Project is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization, registered as a charity in all 50 states.
