Record Managing EditorTemporary overnight camping will now be allowed in two designated areas in Warrenton.Warrenton aldermen, at their last meeting March 17, voted unanimously to adopt code changes to the outdoor public recreation (OPR) zoning district. The move allows overnight camping at the Warren County Fairgrounds and the Warrenton Athletic Complex. Those two properties are the only ones in the city in an OPR zoning district.Previously, overnight camping was prohibited, except for during the week of the Warren County Fair. The Warren County Fair Association had approached the city for the change, according to Jack Hanff, zoning officer/building commissioner. He said Fair officials had been approached by others interested in using the fairgrounds for camping to travel to events in the region. For instance, Hanff said, a group is considering exploring caves in the area and the fairgrounds is a central location for their stay.A special event permit will need to be obtained prior to camping being allowed as part of the code’s requirements. The request must be approved by aldermen. Written permission from the property owner, either the Fair Board or city, also must be received.Hanff said he was glad the board went forward with amending the code.“It’s good that it is a living document,” he said. The planning and zoning commission, during its March 5 meeting, recommended approval by a 6-0 vote.Permit approved for mud bog fundraiserAlso at the March 17 meeting, all six aldermen voted in support of a special event permit for a mud bog to be held May 9 at the Warren County Fairgrounds. The mud bog is a fundraiser for the Warrenton Band Boosters and is scheduled from noon to 7 p.m.The Mid-Missouri Off-Road Association will run the event. As part of the stipulations on the permit, organizers are required to fence off and prohibit spectators from entering the staging, track and shut-down areas. Flagmen also will are required to verify that all areas are clear of spectators and conditions are safe prior to the start of each race. The planning and zoning commission also approved the event permit by a 6-0 vote.Warrenton lifts camping restrictions
