Record Managing EditorWarrenton’s historic run to the Class 3 state title was one for the record books. The Warriors broke or tied team and individual records in nine categories as they left a lasting mark in a season that ended with an impressive 28-2 record. They defeated Jeff City Helias 15-3 in the semifinals Friday and followed up with a 12-2 victory over Cape Girardeau Notre Dame in the championship game Saturday. In the title game, Warrenton’s 14 hits topped the previous record of 13 set by Lutheran South in 2002. The 12 runs scored also is a new state record. The previous high was nine scored by Centralia in 2013.The Warriors also set new marks for most runs scored over the two-game state tourney with 27 and home runs with six.“I knew we were pretty good, but I didn’t know we were this good,” Warrenton Head Coach Trevor Hibbs said. “I am always modest with my teams, but these girls can hit.”The Warriors had four home runs in the championship game, a new single-game record that was set earlier Saturday by Staley when it beat Marquette 10-6 in the Class 4 final. The previous Class 3 record of two home runs was achieved by multiple teams. The four players who hit home runs in the title game — senior Erica Rugh, sophomore Kelsey Huenefeld, junior Kaylee Anderson and sophomore Destinee Frost — all tied the state record. While more than 30 players have hit home runs in a championship game, Rugh is the only one to have hit a grand slam in the championship. Her five RBIs in the game broke the Class 3 record of four set in 2014 by Webb City’s Amber Hayden and tied the statewide mark held by three other players.Senior Taylor Nordwald, who earned the win with a complete-game effort on the mound, also will be in the record books for her performance at the plate. Her three hits tied a Class 3 record, which had been done four other times.Celebrate
