Warrenton Hosts Zumwalt East in Week Nine

Where: Warrenton High School. When: Friday, Oct. 25.Time: 7 p.m.Coaches: Warrenton — Steve McDowell. Zumwalt East — Scott Eacret.Records: Warrenton — 2-6. Zumwalt East — 8-0.Last Year’s Meeting: Zumwalt East 49, Warrenton 28.The Warriors hung around until early in the fourth quarter, when East strung together three unanswered scores. The Lions led 21-13 at halftime and the game was notched at 28-28, before Shane Barrett scored on a pair of runs. Warrenton quarterback T.J. Lafaver completed 20 of 33 passes for 197 yards, while Devin Ray rushed for 115 yards.Outlook: The old addage “saved the best for last” may unfortunately be true for Warrenton, as its hold unbeaten Zumwalt East on Friday. The Warriors will have to execute on both offense and defense — which has been a struggle this season — at the same time. While the offense seems to have progressed with the recent addition of a Power-I look that has Corey Eckenfels and Zach Logan reaching the end zone regularly, the defense continues to be painfully inconsistent. Breakdowns will spell trouble against a Zumwalt East team that has scored less than 35 points just once and has not allowed more than three touchdowns by an opponent. The Lions are powered by dual-threat quarterback, Barrett, who has thrown for 1,425 on 93 of 142 completions. He has notched 18 touchdowns to just three interceptions, while also presenting a threat on the ground. Barrett has rushed for by far a team-best 1,286 yards on 152 carries. Think Scott Lathrop — or if you remember the old East days, Marvin Byrd III. One man is a facilitator for many others, including leading receiver Matt Etherton with 417 yards on 22 catches. D’Andre Campbell has added 24 receptions for 334 yards.Focal Points: The Warriors seemed to have found an effective offensive plan over the past two weeks, but the defense is still letting opponents reach into the 30s, which typically spells a loss. Warrenton may need another 74-point performance to hang with East unless the defense decides to unleash its best game of the season in Week Nine. It’s clear who the man to stop is, but it will take a disciplined effort on every down.

Warrenton sophomore Jacob Abel has been a major contributor for the Warriors.
