Warrenton hosts Wright City for district cross country Saturday

The Warrenton and Wright City cross country teams will return to Warrenton Saturday as the Warriors host the Class 3, District 4 meet.

Warrenton hosted Wright City, among others, last month, and Head Coach Jeremy Collins hopes the home-course advantage helps his runners this weekend.

“Having district on our home course is definitely an advantage,” he said. “Knowing all the turns, the hills and the footing helps.”

The Warrenton boys will be led by sophomore Nathan Nordwald, who qualified for the state meet last year and expects to return next month.

“Nathan has really started racing very well the second half of the season,” Collins said. “We have changed our workouts a little from last season and I think it has helped him out. He is a tough kid mentally and just works extremely hard in practice and in the races.”

Coming off a pair of second-place finishes at the Gateway Athletic Conference North meet, Collins hopes both of his teams continue to impress against a tough field.

“On the boys side, Orchard Farm and St. Charles are going to be tough,” he said. “We also have Lutheran St. Charles new to our district and they have a pretty good team. On the girls side, St. Charles is going to be tough along with two new teams, Incarnate Word and Lutheran St. Charles.”

Andrea Poole is the top runner for the Warrenton girls, but freshman Lexi Frederick has surprised her coach this season.

“Lexi Frederick running up with Andrea Poole has been great for our team,” Collins said. “Anahi Saldana has been running great the couple of meets, too, which has really helped out.”

Poole, the only senior on the team, has led a large group of freshman this season.

Collins said he is pleased with the improvements from his young runners, and hopes to see more progress in the next two meets.

“I think on both sides we have a chance to get three runners on to state,” he said. “It is going to be tough, but we are running pretty well right now and we have a tough group or runners.”

For Wright City, senior Erin Tomschin expects to return to the state meet for the third straight year.

Tomschin finished 103rd (23 minutes, 29.86 seconds) last season at the Class 2 state meet.

The Wildcats moved up to Class 3 season, and are preparing for a more challenging field of teams this weekend.

Sophomore Tristin Riley joined Tomschin at the Class 2 boys state meet last season, and hopes to repeat this   season, as well.
