Warrenton Hosts Winfield Tonight
Posted
By Derrick Forsythe, Record Sports Editor
Where:Warrenton High School. When:Friday, Oct. 11.Time:7 p.m.Coaches:Warrenton — Steve McDowell. Winfield — Keith McGlasson.Records:Warrenton — 1-5. Winfield— 2-4.Last Year’s Meeting:Warrenton 47, Winfield 20.The Warriors earned their second win of the season on the road last season, with an exceptional performance by a pair of seniors named Devin. Warrenton led 27-6 by halftime, with Devin Roberts hauling in six catches for 149 yards and Devin Ray rushing for a career-high 214 yards on 23 carries. Quarterback T.J. Lafaver completed 13 of 26 passes.Outlook:Winfield is experiencing another struggling season, having been shut out against St. Charles last Friday. The Warriors’ two wins have come against Clopton and winless Missouri Military Academy.Winfield’s offense is led by David Bauer, who has completed 22 of 31 passes for 380 yards this season. Chandler Hollingsworth has been the primary target with 291 yards on 15 catches. Damian Cagle has six catches for 107 yards. Cagle is the team’s leading rusher with 213 yards on 15 touches. Cagle has already played quarterback, connecting on 16 of 36 passes for 222 yards. The Warriors have combind for nine interceptions.Winfield will likely attack out of the spread formation with counters in an effort to get the ball to the outside, which they have had success with this season.Defensively, Winfield’s leader is Max Rose with 13 tackles on a defense that seems fairly balanced statistically. McDowell is expecting the Warriors to show a 4-4 look with a lot of man coverage.Warrenton is still employing a two-man quarterback system, with Zach Logan converted into more of a running role. McDowell says his team is stressing offense this week, in a desperate attempt to generate points after being shut out two consecutive weeks. The Warriors are going to focus more on the short passing game, with deep tries having been ineffective this season.Focal Points:These two teams have a common thread in that both have struggled passing the ball this season and have an abundance of interceptions. They are run reliant with aspirations of including a more productive air attack.Warrenton is still reeling with injuries, as starting running back Drake Wagner is expected to miss a second straight week. Meanwhile, Logan isn’t in full health and starting kicker Dillen Mayfield is also out.The Warriors are facing an adverse season full of trials, but Friday’s game is one of their most opportunistic chances to put another win on the board and break from the scoreless slump.
Warrenton quarterback Braydan Chmiel and the Warriors are looking for their second win of the season tonight as they host Winfield.
