Where: Warrenton High School.
When: Friday, Sept. 13.Time: 7 p.m.
Coaches: Warrenton — Steve McDowell. Washington — Zach Schneider.
Records: Warrenton — 0-2. Washington — 1-1.
Last Year’s Meeting: Washington 35, Warrenton 34.Another epic battle saw Washington escaping on the wheels of power running back Kyle Summers, who rushed for 125 yards. The Blue Jays needed an 18-yard field goal with 12 seconds left to escape after Warrenton quarterback T.J. Lafaver completed 16 of 20 attempts, tossing three touchdown passes. The game was reminiscent of the two teams’ 2010 meeting, when Washington also prevailed in overtime.
Outlook: The Warriors are ailing after two weeks, having lost two starting receivers to season-ending injuries. Sophomore Justin McBroom joined the already sidelined Alec Tonioli after breaking his arm on a kickoff return at Troy in Week Two. Reduced numbers at the skill positions presents an unwanted challenge for the Warriors, who struggled to muster any type of offense until late in last Friday’s contest. Warrenton used two quarterbacks, bringing in sophomore Braydan Chmiel late in the contest after having started junior Zach Logan.McDowell is expecting Washington to present a stout running game much as it did last season, with Summers back in the mix. The Blue Jays are replacing a three-year starter at quarterback in their spread shotgun look, sometimes featuring a Pistol-I formation.Defensively, McDowell compliments Washington on being a team that makes complete tackles on the first point of contact in its 4-3 attack. He feels like Warrenton’s increased size over last season will provide for better matchups on the line of scrimmage.
Focal Points: Another injury to a dynamic athlete is certainly not what the Warriors needed, with the defense carrying the bulk of the success this season. Losing McBroom and Tonioli was also a shot the special teams. Establishing any type of offensive rhythm is going to be crucial in order for the Warriors to turn around their season. Warrenton has not beaten Washington since 2007.
